Bump-and-Run School
Why this drill
The lowest-lofted chip you can get away with is the highest percentage shot in golf — the ball on the ground obeys physics, in the air it obeys hope. A dedicated block with the 8-iron installs the shot links golfers never stopped trusting.
Setup
An 8-iron, ten balls just off the green with clear fairway-cut ground to the hole — no carry over rough. Putting grip, hands ahead, ball back of center.
The drill
Ten bump-and-runs: land the ball a pace or two onto the green and let it run out like a putt. Read each one exactly as a putt first — break and all — because from the moment it lands, it is one. Score finishes inside two club-lengths. Then play five balls alternating 8-iron bump and sand-wedge chip to the same hole; keep score by proximity. For most players the 8-iron wins immediately, and the short game gets simpler for life.
