The Impact Bag

Why this drill

Impact is the only moment the ball attends, and an impact bag (or a stuffed duffel) lets you rehearse it at zero miles per hour: hands ahead, lead wrist flat, body open. Fifty quiet reps a week rebuild the position that scooping destroys.

Setup

An impact bag, or an old duffel packed firm with towels, set where the ball would be. A mid iron and room to swing to waist height.

The drill

Ten slow-motion swings that stop dead against the bag: check hands ahead of the clubhead, lead wrist flat or bowed, hips open a turn ahead of the chest, weight on the lead side. Hold each contact for three seconds and feel the shape. Then ten at half speed — thump, hold, check. The bag never lies about a flip: the clubhead beating the hands makes a different sound and a bent wrist. Finish with five air swings recreating the thump position without the bag.

Arrive with the hands first — the clubhead is always last to the party.
