Towel Under the Arms

Driving rangeHandicap 15+15 minblock workirons

Why this drill

When the arms swing without the body, contact turns into a lottery. A towel pinned across the chest by both upper arms forces everything to turn together — the oldest connection drill in the teaching canon, and still the fastest.

Setup

A range towel stretched across your chest, one end trapped under each armpit. A short iron and fifteen balls off a low tee.

The drill

Hit fifteen three-quarter shots without letting the towel fall. If it drops on the backswing, the trail arm is flying; on the through-swing, the arms are outracing the turn. Score towel-stays-put strikes out of fifteen. The ball flies shorter and lower in this drill — that is normal, and the compact contact is the point. Finish with five normal swings keeping the same connected feeling, towel gone.
